Enjoy the idyllic spa in its original condition built in the 18th Century by Hereditary Wilhelm IX, later Elector Wilhelm I of Hesse-Kassel, as a retreat for himself and his subjects. Hanau made (architectural) history before that though: Calvinist refugees founded Neu-Hanau around the year 1600 and created checkered streets. Particularly worth seeing: the Walloon-Dutch Congregation simultaneum mixtum. Art historian Anja Zeller presents the most beautiful places in Hanau and its most interesting personalities, many of which wonderfully pictured by photographer Doris Schneider.
