This work examines the problem of the intrusion of Western colonial concepts of land ‘ownership’ in Samoa that threaten the indigenous understanding of inheritance, in which all Suli (heirs) are custodians (not ‘owners’) of land on behalf of their families. Employing contextual biblical hermeneutics and a decolonizing ‘Suli hermeneutics,’ the author ‘re-reads’ and ‘cross-examines’ biblical narratives of inheritance based on election theology, in particular Genesis 21:10-14, where the ‘Chosen People’ promise narrative culminates in Ishmael’s loss of inheritance. The biblical diselection of the ‘un-chosen’ in favor of the ‘chosen’ has implications for contemporary threats to the inclusive role of Samoan Suli as protectors of the sacred land, and to shared custodianship of land in other contexts.
