Nor can I deny the influence that they had in their day, both in New England and Old England, or the fascination of one of the most eventful periods in English history. This book, then, is an attempt to understand them better. It is a story that begins in Wapping, then moves to North Britain, crosses over to America, and back to England again, ending in Hertfordshire, where I was born.
