Dogs perceive the world differently than humans. Through their long co-evolution with Homo Sapiens, they have learned to interpret our emotions, facial expressions and body language, but the fact is that they have a reality that is entirely their own and hidden from us. A dog’s reality manifests itself by their radically different perception and processing of sensory stimuli. Whereas humans are primarily oriented by visual cues, a dog‘s physiognomy is largely based on their analysis of their surroundings by their sense of smell. This is especially evident among hunting dogs, which have been bred over the millennia for even more acute and focused olfactory function. One of these breeds is the Spaniel, which can rightly be called a highly specialised macrosmatic canine breed. If we desire to keep our Spaniels busy and more importantly, busy in a way that is appropriate for their unique traits, it would be beneficial for us to get more integrally involved in the Spaniel’s special sensory world. This book would like to accompany and guide you during this journey and show you a path in which you and your Spaniel can work and learn together as a team. It has been written for all Spaniel owners and intends to help a trainer guide a Spaniel towards whatever proficiency the trainer decides is best for each unique dog; be that the role of a family pet, a non-hunter training strictly with dummies or as a true working dog for organized hunting of live game.
