Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger – COPAIN

Gerda Steiner und Jörg Lenzlinger entwerfen mit ihren Installationen ausufernde Welt-Analysen. Fantasie, politische Haltung, Erfindungsreichtum und leichtfüßiger Humor prägen ihr Schaffen. Nun haben sie sich einem Grundnahrungsmittel angenommen – dem Brot. Es sind nicht politische Aktivisten am Werk, sondern zwei politisch denkende Poeten. Was sie über vier Stockwerke ausbreiten, ist vor allem auch eine Feier des Brots, eine überschwängliche Hommage an den Reichtum von Formen, Traditionen und Backweisen. Im Ausstellungsraum Friedhof Forum verknüpfen die Künstler das Thema Brot mit Tod und Sterben. Sie tun dies auf überraschend verspielte Weise: Totenschiffe aus Brot, eine Mehluhr, deren Zeit nicht verrinnt, Miniatur-Särge für Pestizid-Opfer, ein Mobile aus Brotrinden, Herzschrittmacher und Zigarettenfilter – all dies versammelt sich zu einem Panoptikum, in welchem das Sterben transformiert wird. Mathias Balzer, Frida Magazin Die Ausstellung COPAIN der Künstler Gerda Steiner und Jörg Lenzlinger ist eine Hymne an das Brot und die Menschen, die es herstellen und genießen – Bäckerinnen und Bäcker, aber auch Brotliebhaberinnen und -liebhaber aus allen Kulturen – und bietet einen neuen Blick auf dieses Lebensmittel, dessen Geschichte mit den Anfängen des Ackerbaus beginnt und das sich seither ständig weiterentwickelt hat. With their installations, Gerda Steiner and Jörg Lenzlinger develop extensive, complex world-analyses. Their creative output is marked by vivid fantasy, political orientation, abundant inventiveness, and nimble humor. Now they have turned their attention to a basic foodstuff—namely bread. It is not political activists who are at work here, but two politically thinking poets. What they spread out over four floors is above all a celebration of bread, an exuberant tribute to the abundance of its types, traditions, and baking procedures. In the exhibition space Friedhof Forum, the artists bring the theme of bread into connection with death and dying. They do so in a surprisingly playful manner. Ships of the dead made of bread; a flour clock whose time does not trickle away; miniature coffins for pesticide victims; a mobile made out of pieces of bread crust; cardiac pacemakers; and cigarette filters—all this is gathered into a cabinet of curiosities in which death is transformed.
