Der Biograph C. Suetonius Tranquillus wurde 70 oder 75 n. Chr. in Hippo Regius (im heutigen Algerien) geboren und war zunächst in Rom als Redner und Anwalt tätig, bevor er in die Dienste des Kaisers Hadrian trat. Als Kabinettsekretär und Kanzleichef hatte er Zugang zu den staatlichen Archiven. Eine wertvolle Quelle für sein Werk De vita Caesarum, das - aufgeteilt in Rubriken wie Herkunft, Familie, Kindheit usw. - zwolf Biographien der römischen Kaiser von Caesar bis Domitian enthält. Mit all ihren Licht- und Schattenseiten werden die Caesaren dargestellt, und es entsteht nebenbei das Sittengemälde einer etwa 200 Jahre umfassenden Epoche. De viris illustribus schildert das leben und Wirken von Rednern, Grammatikern und Philosophen und zeigt auf, wie die um Eigenständigkeit bemühte Philologie in Rom sich in Auseinandersetzung mit dem griechischen Vorbild entwickelte. Since 1923 the Sammlung Tusculum has published authoritative editions of Greek and Latin works together with a German translation. The original texts are comprehensively annotated, and feature an introductory chapter. In the new volumes, additional essays delve into specific aspects of the works, illuminating their historical context and reception to the present day.
